More Ajax...
Many companies are showing off their AJAX applications. The Pick Of The Day is one AJAX company in particular, Ajax 13, Inc. They currently have a word processor, a spreadsheet viewer, a drawing package, a media player, ana a media mixer/editor, and soon to be deployed is a DeskTop environment.
Unlike standard office programs that you install on your computer, AJAX applications are Internet based web applications. When new features or patches are added to an AJAX application, those changes are immediately available to you without the need for reinstallation, reconfiguration, or patching the software- the most complicated thing you might have to do is just close and reopen the application.
Here is a summary of platform independent AJAX applications available from Ajax 13, Inc.
AjaxWrite is a light weight word processor with functionality comparable to Open Office but without some of the uncommonly used advanced features. You can import and export documents in all popular formats, including documents with graphics right from and to your local hard disk. One feature they currently lack is a spell checker.
ajaxXLS viewer displays the content of spredsheet files created by products such as OpenOffice or Microsoft Excel. Typical spredsheet cell formatting categories such as text style, decimals, currencies, date, and time as well as backgrounds and borders are preserved. Even formulas are preserved with ajaxXLS viewer. Also of interest is that the company is publishing a methodology so any email client, search engine, blog, or other software can provide a link to an existing internet hosted .xls document and anyone would be able to open that document using ajaxXLS viewer.
AjaxSketch is an SVG based object oriented (vector) drawing program similar to Inkscape. Currently the functionality is not at the same level as Inkscape but it is good for creating simple charts and diagrams. It includes a circle, square, line, polygon, pen and a text tool. You can perform basic operations such as object rotation, object resizing, color changes for pen and backgrounds and you can alter and object opacity. AjaxSketch, like Inkscape, uses SVG format natively. SVG is an open standard and programs such as Adobe Illustrator, Inkscape, Macromedia Freehand, MS Visio can can open these files.
ajaxTunesis a web-based music player which plays streaming music from the Internet using just a web browser. By storing your songs online you can access them anywhere you can run your web browser. You can even share your songs or playlists with other people on the Internet.
